The Rise in 'Crash for Cash' Scams Involving Moped Riders

Motorists are being warned about a rise in "crash for cash" scams, in which moped riders deliberately crash into cars to cash in on insurance claims. These fraudulent activities have seen a dramatic increase, particularly in London, where incidents have skyrocketed in 2023.

The Rise of Moped Scams
This latest data from Allianz reveals that the worst-hit area of London is the southern region, which accounts for 42% of the city’s reported incidents. One of the most targeted areas has been Wallington, in the borough of Sutton, where residents have even formed a WhatsApp group to share reports and stay vigilant.

The scam typically involves moped riders working in pairs. One rider stops traffic, allowing the target vehicle to proceed, while the second rider speeds past and intentionally collides with the car. This tactic catches drivers off guard and leaves them vulnerable to fraudulent claims.

The Scale of the Problem
Since 2012, the total value of bogus claims involving mopeds has reached an astonishing £27 million. From 2021 to 2023 alone, 2,250 drivers in London fell victim to these scams, with many of the perpetrators working as couriers.

To combat this somewhat concerning issue, the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) is collaborating with Trading Standards officers to identify rogue businesses involved in repairing damaged mopeds and scooters. A recent operation led to the seizure of mopeds suspected to have been used in crashes and hundreds of number plates used to disguise them.

With the rise of these scams, it's more important than ever for motorists to be vigilant. Here are five tips to protect yourself:

Stay Alert: Always remain vigilant for any unusual driving behaviour, especially at junctions.
Document the Scene: Take as many photos of the scene, especially the fraudster's moped, as possible, as well as your own car.
Gather Information: Note all details - vehicle registrations, description, weather, time & date.
Collect Evidence: Look for witnesses and nearby CCTV, dashcam, and doorbell cameras.
Contact Your Insurer: Report any suspicions to your insurer and the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) Cheatline on 0800 422 0421 or visit www.insurancefraudbureau.org
